Energyficient Systems is an energy services company and distributor specializing in lighting efficiency projects. We provide turnkey service and work with our clients to develop a project from the ground up – starting with a survey, then design, engineering, materials supply, project management, and installation. We also research all applicable financial and tax incentives. Our efficiency designs are custom and always engineered to a client’s specific needs. Our proposals are investment-grade assessments that provide our clients the information they need to make educated, focused, financial decisions.

We’re dedicated to transforming businesses and organizations through the inspired use of light. We increase efficiency, reduce costs, and improve working conditions.

Energyficient is headquartered in Burlington, Iowa, but we’re taking our expertise across the country and helping organizations everywhere install more efficient, environmentally friendly, money-saving lighting systems.

The Team

Chad Palmer — President, CEO

Chad provides leadership and vision for the Energyficient Team. Born and raised in Burlington, Iowa — where he still lives — lighting and electrical work is in his blood. He began working for his father’s electrical contracting company at the age of ten.

ToChadday, Chad has over 28 years of experience in the lighting industry and is well respected as a leader, innovator and entrepreneur.  He is also the inventor behind several new products for Energyficient including the new Agrificient™ brand of LED lighting and Q-Series electrical box and luminaire.  He is a Certified Lighting Efficiency Professional (CLEP) through the Association of Energy Engineers, and is a long time member of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America where he has served on the Industrial Lighting Committee.  He is very active in his community and industry.  He serves on many local committees including Burlington’s

Zoning Board of Adjustment and several other committees under Greater Burlington Partnership, including the Burlington Lightscape Committee.  He is also a recent graduate of the Greater Burlington Leadership program.  Chad believes strongly in and encourages his team to pursue an ongoing continuing of their education and community involvement.  He takes a special interest in creating seminars and including special details in his proposals to further his client’s education and understanding of the possibilities and the science of lighting efficiency.

When he is not working on the business of Energyficient you’ll find Chad on a beach or in his boat with his Wife and Daughter; or pursuing his other interests in politics, horsepower, audio, and music.


Justin Joens — Senior Vice President, CCO, Business Development

Justin is Energyficient’s first client contact. With 15+ years experience in management and sales, Justin’s dedication to providing exceptional customer service is integral to Energyficient’s ability to design high-efficiency lighting installations. His excellent interpersonal and communication skills ensure a positive sales experience.

As CCO, Justin is committed to not only establishing, but also nurturing client relationships. He conducts in-depth interviews with customers and potential clients so he can help deliver a project that is engineered to meet the customer’s energy goals. With his strong capability to problem solve, Justin applies foresight and creativity to individually address client needs.

Justin is based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Although he spends most of his day on the phone or email, he can also be found on-site assessing client concerns. When not talking with customers, Justin is cheering for the Iowa Hawkeyes or perfecting his swing on the golf course.


J. Byers Wolf — Vice President, COO, Design Engineering

Byers is a native of Fort Madison, Iowa, and has more than twelve years lighting and electrical experience, and is a licensed journeyman electrician. Starting in 2004, Byers held an apprentice position before going to Northeast Iowa Community College. He graduated with his AA in ByersIndustrial Electrical in 2006, and then went on to work for an electrical contractor before moving into the lighting sector.  Byers has a passion to learn and grow within the lighting market, in an effort to always provide Energyficient’s customers with the highest quality lighting designs and projects.

As Chief Operating Officer, Byers spends most of his time designing/engineering, providing oversight and direction for the engineering staff, and cultivating manufacturer relationships.  He begins all new opportunities by conducting on-site assessments to provide baseline data for engineering, and works very closely with the sales team, engineers, and project managers during all phases of project development and construction.

When not on-site or designing a new lighting project, he can be found spending time with his wife and three children, or reading a good book.  Byers is a member and shepherd at Harmony Bible Church, and a committee member of The Greater Burlington Partnership Government Affairs committee.


Aaron Engberg — General Manager, Products

AaronEAaron was born and raised in Burlington, Iowa, where he now currently resides with his wife Karen and their three children Reagan, Anna, and Landon. Aaron attended Iowa State University where he earned a bachelors degree in Computer Engineering.

As General Manager of Products, Aaron runs the day to day operations of the business, leads sales and marketing activities for our manufactured products, as well as manages new product development and develops new business opportunities.

Aaron also has over twenty years of experience in the field of Software Engineering, Product Management, as well as sales and marketing.

When not in the office Aaron serves as a board of director member for Garrett’s Path as well as the Notre Dame Music Boosters. He enjoys spending time with family, attending his children’s sporting events, and supporting the Chicago Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeyes.


Kirk VanScoy — Senior Account Managerkirkv1

Kirk is originally from Ames, Iowa, and majored in Retail Management at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, Iowa. He has more than 10 years of experience in the lighting industry, including professional lighting audits and project design geared to maximize energy savings. Kirk also has several years of direct sales experience, and is currently Senior Project Manager for schools, commercial and industrial customers.

Energyficient is committed to on-site safety not only for our crews but for our customers as well. That’s why Kirk has completed both his 10-hour and 30-hour OSHA training, as well as General Industry Safety and Health courses.

In addition to his lighting experience, Kirk has 18 years of experience working at Exide Technologies where he started out as a front-line supervisor and ended up being Assistant Plant Manager. So he feels right at home in an industrial environment.


Brian Kellen — Senior Project Manager

BrBrainian oversees all projects for our company, once a project is approved it goes to his desk, and the planning process begins. He then coordinates all contractors and sub-contractors needed for the project and assures all standards are met and maintained, as well as monitoring the cost of the project and overseeing the budget details.

He is from Burlington, Iowa and now currently resides in New London, Iowa.

Brian is certified in OSHA-30 as well as MSHA-24, he is also a certified Journeyman Electrician. From 1998-2005 he worked as an electrician for various companies starting in Burlington, Iowa, then advancing in management positions for high profile federal contractors in the Washington, D.C., area known as Sim G Technologies where he was the Project Manager. He worked with electrical projects as well as fire protection in high government profile projects for military bases and other government facilities with high security clearances.

When not in the office Brian spends his weekends traveling with his family to watch his children in sports, he also enjoys golfing.


Brandon McCracken — Design Engineer

Brandon grew up in Van Buren county, Iowa, but relocated to Burlington from West Des Moines, IA. He has previousBrandon work experience with Wells Fargo Home Mortgage as a Consumer Mortgage Underwriter.

He and his wife Samantha, who is the director of a Burlington preschool, have three children: Taylor, Harper, and Sawyer. Brandon is also a church council member for Faith Lutheran of Burlington.

He is a Burlington Leadership Course graduate, and holds an A+ Computer Hardware certification. He earned his Associate Degree in the Applied Science of Computer Systems and Networking from Indian Hills Community College, and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management with a Human Resources minor from Simpson College.


Dylan Arnold

Dylan Graduated from University of Iowa with a BA in Mathematics with an emphasis in Engineering, Computer Science and Business. He has over fifteen years of experience within the lighting, energy and electrical industry. His wide-ranging experience in both public and private sectors has built his reputation as a top industry expert and sales Dylanproducer. With a primary focus of helping customers reduce their energy consumption costs through lighting retrofits.

Dylan’s success is based on his experience to analyze each project based on the customer’s needs, and design a retrofit that utilizes the most appropriate lighting technologies. Dylan has successfully provided energy conservation upgrades within the markets of: Property Management, Retail, Big-Box Retail, Fast Food, Casual Dining, Warehouses and Office Buildings, Petroleum Stations, Grocery Chains, School Districts, City and County Buildings, Casinos, as well as Hospitality, and Airports.

When not in the office Dylan enjoys watching college football, especially the Denver Broncos. As well as playing golf, camping, fishing, dirt biking, and traveling.


Aaron M. Nelson —  Business Unit Executive

Aaron was born, raised and currently resides in Northern IowaAaronN. He has over ten years of experience in the fields of Utility Tax Exemptions, Power Factor Correction, and Project Management.

With Utility Tax Exemption services Aaron provides the required studies, documentation and representation to the customers utility providers which allows an exemption or reduction of applicable taxes on the energy consumed in manufacturing or processing. In most cases he can also use this information to request refunds from the Department of Revenue for taxes previously paid.  With Power Factor Correction services Aaron can provide turn-key solutions to mitigate or lessen power factor penalties through the installation of custom designed power capacitor banks.

When not working, He spends his time as a board member of the Gas and Electric Credit Union, enjoys attending his children’s events, riding his motorcycle, playing music, reading, writing, and politics.


Andrew Busse – Technical Writer

Andrew is an Iowa native who recently graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Science in Technical Communication. In addition to his school work, Andrew was active in many extracurricular activities where he gained valuable leadership experience.

As Energyficient’s first technical writer, Andrew looks forward to sharing his knowledge and experience by helping the engineering and sales team communicate with clients to provide them with an efficient lighting solution that is easy to understand.

Outside of the office Andrew enjoys wrenching on his Camaro and spending time with his family and friends.


Arlo Winterboer —  Western Iowa Salesman

Arlo is originally from North West, Iowa but now currently resides in Audubon, Iowa with his wife Sharon. He has three children and four grandchildren. He has received sales awards as well as the Iowa Pursuit of Energy Efficiencies award, he is also a member of the Audubon Chamber.
